CCF Awards Grant to Open Door Food Pantry

The Canton Community Foundation Board of Directors approved a grant to the Open Door Food Pantry to purchase a new walk-in cooler. The grant award was $6,500 and is from the CCF Community Fund and the Jim and Linda Demmer Donor Advised Fund.

The Open Door Ministry is in the food distribution network of Gleaners Community Food Bank and Forgotten Harvest as well as community donations. The Canton-based food pantry feeds people from the western Wayne County area and Ypsilanti distributing nearly 700,000 lbs of food so far this year. On weekly average over 400 families received food equaling 36,663 people to date. There has been a 42% increase in numbers of families requesting food in 2010 over 2009.

Steve and Jackie Darr are the volunteer coordinators of the pantry and remark that this new cooler triples the fresh fruit and vegetable capacity, just in time for the increased demand. Our guests are eager to take these nutritious items home to their families. Steve states that, “Approximately 6,000 lbs of food is placed in the new cooler each week; without this cooler we could not keep this amount of food fresh each week.”

There will be an “unveiling” of the cooler on Tuesday, July 13th at 11:30 a.m. at 4301 S. Lilley Road, Canton. All are welcome to the reception.

CCF takes the big-picture view of tough challenges and responds to community needs and leverages resources to create lasting change.  "This grant represents the Canton Community Foundation's recognition of the hardships many local residents are enduring and our efforts to alleviate some of the difficulties, states Joan Noricks, president of the foundation.  "Open Door does an excellent job at distributing food to the hungry in an efficient and compassionate manner with the ultimate goal to enable families to provide food for themselves."

 Community Health Care Feasibility Presentation

Concerned with the economic conditions and the corresponding impact on the health care of our community, the Canton Community Foundation commenced a community study in late 2009 to determine a number of significant health care related issues.  Conducted by representatives from the University of Michigan , Ross Business School , the research team uncovered the overall magnitude of the problem, the populations most impacted, and potential solutions.

Key findings and strategies emerged from this research and were presented by the research team and discussed at a special community meeting on June 10, 2010 at the Summit on the Park.

The next steps are:

  • Create an Initiative Leadership Taskforce under the Umbrella of the Canton Community Foundation
  • Analyze Additional Communities
  • Gather Support
