Grant Guidelines
What are the Priorities of the Foundation?
The Foundation believes that with limited unrestricted funds, it is necessary to determine where those dollars can be placed to have the greatest impact on the needs and growth of this community.
Grant Making Principles
  • To benefit Canton residents
  • To encourage programs which are collaborative, comprehensive and have the potential to be continuous
  • To encourage leveraging and matching grant opportunities from multiple funders
  • To support "seed" money opportunities for innovative projects
  • To focus on the prevention of problems rather than the cure
Types of Support
While the Canton Community Foundation will generally make one-year grant commitments, it will consider making longer term commitments for new efforts which show strong promise for positive impact in the Canton community. Re-granting will not provide continuing operational funding for programs/organizations (though consideration may be given in exceptional cases). A project must meet multiple granting objectives of the Foundation and demonstrate clear community benefit.
What Will the Foundation Generally Not Fund?
While the Foundation remains flexible in trying to meet community needs, the following areas will generally not be considered for funding at this time:

  • Routine operating expenses
  • Travel, tours or trips, publications, videos, films, television or radio programs
  • Conference speakers
  • Endowment campaigns
  • Construction
  • Special fundraising events and sponsorships
  • Organizations located outside greater Canton, Michigan area
  • Religious organizations for religious purposes
  • Existing obligations or debts/liabilities
  • Individuals
