2009 Giving Hope Women's Giving Circle Grants

The Giving Hope Women's Giving Circle awarded two grants in 2009!  Our first was awarded in May of 2009.  This grant was awarded to the Girl Scouts from the Heart of Michigan.  A $4,000 grant benefited "The Uniquely ME!" program.  Through this program middle school aged girls are educated on self esteem issues and self awareness.  Our second grant was awarded in July of 2009.  The organization First Step received $2,000 for the "Mommy and Me" program.  Through this program First Step conducts community education activities about abuse prevention.

The Women's Giving Circle Makes Its First Donation
Joan Noricks, Loren Wadington, Steve Darr and Nancy RichterMembers of Giving Hope Women's Giving Circle presented its first donation to Canton's Open Door Food Bank. Joan Noricks, Loren Wadington and Nancy Richter, members of the Women's Giving Circle, presented a check for $655 to Steve Darr, director of Open Door, to purchase personal hygiene products for women receiving assistance from the food bank.

The money was collected from attendees of the recent Giving Circle kick-off event. The food bank, affiliated with the Tri-City Christian Center, has had a shortage of products such as shampoo, combs and brushes, lotions, and makeup because of the growing need for food due to an increase in the number of families requiring assistance. "Full bellies are more important than clean hair," explains Darr. "But there is a need for hygiene products. The women in our program will be very grateful."

Giving Hope is a pooled fund through which members make grants together on issues related to women and their families in the greater Canton and Plymouth area. A fund of the Canton Community Foundation, Giving Hope currently has 33 founding members. Any woman interested in the Circle can contact the Foundation to learn more.
